KAZAN, Russia, October 24. The world needs more sustainable supply chains, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said at the first plenary session of the XVI BRICS Plus summit in Kazan today, Trend reports.

"We are confronted with a paradox. Some issues have only become more severe, despite the fact that substantial adjustments are occurring. This pertains to the continuous diversification of consumption. The socio-economic advancements of countries that have recently achieved independence from colonial rule have been expedited, resulting in the creation of new opportunities and potential. There are now more opportunities for individuals to take advantage of their abilities," he explained.

According to the minister, it is essential to contemplate the establishment of an authentic multipolar world.

"We see that many problems that began in the past continue today, taking on new forms and manifestations. This is evident in the approach to managing modern technologies and resources. Let’s acknowledge that the benefits of globalization are distributed very unevenly. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the burdens borne by the Global South.

We are witnessing issues in food security, health, and safety. The Summit for the Future emphasized that the world is under real threat, and we may not succeed in achieving sustainable development goals. How can we rectify this situation? It is important that changes yield benefits for those who are currently left behind.

We can ensure a more equitable world order by strengthening and expanding independent platforms, broadening choices in various sectors, and minimizing excessive dependence on those we might be able to do without, and we can reform existing mechanisms and institutions," said Jaishankar.

Besides, according to him, it's high time we set up more production hubs.

"We need to remember that more resilient supply chains are required to meet the needs of each region, and every region should have its own production capacities and capabilities. We also must address the imbalances that are the legacy of the colonial era.

Greater transport interconnectedness is needed so we can better manage risks. We are building digital infrastructure, and we can create new payment infrastructures and interfaces," he added.
