BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 24. The construction of the Khizi-Absheron wind power plant marks a significant step in expanding the use of renewable energy in Azerbaijan, the director of the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency (AREA) under the Ministry of Energy Javid Abdullayev said during an event at Azerbaijan's Baku Shipyard, which celebrated the delivery of wind turbine blades for the project, Trend reports.

“The project, which facilitates Azerbaijan's transition to green energy, marks ACWA Power's inaugural venture in the country. Construction is currently underway, with the station anticipated to commence operations in 2025,” Abdullayev stated.

He noted that the plant is projected to generate approximately 1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, saving around 220 million cubic meters of natural gas and preventing over 400,000 tons of carbon emissions while providing power to around 300,000 homes.

“The total cost of the project exceeds $300 million, fully funded by foreign investments,” he added.

The Khizi-Absheron wind power plant will be constructed in two locations: Zone-1 in the Absheron district and Khizi-3 in the Khizi district, featuring 37 wind turbines designed for optimal wind capture.

The project aligns with Azerbaijan’s goals of economic diversification and modernization of its energy system, including increasing foreign direct investment in the non-oil sector, as outlined in the Strategic Roadmap for the National Economic Prospects. The Khizi-Absheron wind power plant is a key component of these diversification efforts.
