BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 24. The construction of the Kambarata-1 hydropower plant on the Naryn River is set to enhance the energy security of the entire region, Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) Nikolay Podguzov said in an interview with Trend.

"I would first like to highlight the increased regional cooperation in the water-energy sector and its development. A notable example of such cooperation is the significant progress on the Kambarata-1 Hydropower Plant project on the Naryn River," Podguzov stated.

He reminded that the governments of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan have agreed to jointly establish a joint-stock company for the construction of the Kambarata-1 Hydropower Plant, with Kyrgyzstan holding 34 percent, Kazakhstan 33 percent, and Uzbekistan 33 percent.

"Preparatory work is underway. The plant will have a capacity of 1,860 megawatts and will produce 5.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. The plant’s construction under the principles of cross-border public-private partnerships addresses both the energy and water security needs of the region," Podguzov emphasized.

The Chairman also noted that the development of new transport routes, new gas transport infrastructure, warehouse construction, digitalization of the economy, increasing demands for modern urban infrastructure, the rapid growth of cargo transportation with China, and its active involvement in regional energy infrastructure development are shaping Kyrgyzstan’s economic policy in response to the challenges of the water-energy complex in the Aral Sea basin.
