KAZAN, Russia, October 24. Laos wants to formally announce its interest in becoming a member of BRICS, the country's President Thongloun Sisoulith said at the first plenary session of the XVI BRICS Plus summit in Kazan today, Trend reports.

"We are ready to enhance our interaction with BRICS on a wide range of issues. We hope for your support in accepting Laos as a future member of the BRICS group. Today, more than ever, BRICS plays an irreplaceable role in changing the world order and creating cooperation mechanisms that are mutually beneficial and effective for all countries, especially for developing nations of the Global South, which in turn helps us build a better future. These commitments are fully aligned with the theme of today's meeting, 'Together Building a Better World'," he also said.

Sisoulith noted that Laos relies on multilateral mechanisms to achieve sustainable cooperation.

"We also emphasize the decisive role of creating multilateral cooperation in the spirit of multilateral mechanisms, which is particularly necessary for establishing peace, security, and balance. Laos has become the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

In order to foster resilience, we have identified nine key areas, including economic integration, inclusive sustainable growth, economic and humanitarian cooperation, health collaboration, and community expansion," the president stated.

He added that Laos views BRICS as an effective mechanism of interaction with significant potential to influence the global arena.

"Therefore, we urge BRICS to continue strengthening its leadership and moving the world toward just development and equality. BRICS and developing countries must enhance both multilateral and bilateral cooperation, supporting each other and increasing assistance to the Global South. All of this will create favorable conditions for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 and ensuring inclusivity in their implementation," he concluded.
