Detained Activists of Azerbaijani Opposition Party Released (Updated)

Azerbaijan, Baku, 1 August/ Trend , corr K. Zarbaliyeva/ The activists of the oppositional Musavat party who were detained while attempting to demonstrate before the Baku City Administration on 1 August, have been released.

The oppositional Musavat Party of Azerbaijan attempted to stage an unauthorized demonstration in front of Baku City Administration on 1 August. Though several activists of the Party tried to march ahead to the building of Baku City Administration, the police blocked their way as it was unauthorized.

The demonstrators protested against the restrictions on freedom of assembly. They also set forth slogans of Free Elections. Some 10 activists of Musavat were detained and were taken to the police department of Sabail District of Baku.

Musavat has held two unauthorized demonstrations in front of Baku City Administration so far. A total of 13 activists of party were detained on 11 July demonstration and they were released after warning.

The Musavat part activists demanded to insure the right of the citizens to the freedom of assembly and democratic conditions prior to the elections.

The oppositional party Musavat was founded in 1992. Isa Gambar, the present Chairman of the Party was the Ex-Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament (Milli Majlis) in 1992 to1993 and was nominated for the 2003 presidential elections. The Party is represented by five MPs in the parliament.
