Azerbaijan is a crucial actor for Russia in the region, said Dmitry Trofimov, deputy director of the fourth department of CIS countries at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
He made the remarks at a founding meeting of the Russia-Azerbaijan Business Council.
Trofimov pointed out that the bilateral relations with Azerbaijan are designated as strategic partnership.
"Azerbaijan is one of the key actors in the region," he said. "The country is crucial for us in terms of creating our strategy in Transcaucasia and in terms of the balanced policy in the Caspian region."
Russia is also actively involved in the negotiation process for the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, according to Trofimov.
He noted that the trade and economic relations between Russia and Azerbaijan are developing quite steadily, but in 2015 the bilateral trade turnover dropped, which is not consistent with the development dynamics.
Trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Russia reached $4 billion, which is not so bad, he said, adding that unfortunately, it decreased by 30 percent in 2015.
"The creation of the business council is a long-awaited tool, which will give a momentum to the trade and economic partnership," said Trofimov.
