Jordan increases its fuel imports

In 2012, Jordan increased its imports of energy resources by 15 per cent compared to the previous year, according to a report of the Institute of Statistics of the country, published on its website on Wednesday.

According to the report, in 2012, Jordan imported energy to the sum of $6.5 billion. Last year, Jordan paid 52.7 per cent more for the imported electricity than in 2011.

Oil imports to Jordan rose from $2.3 billion to $2.5 billion in 2012. The country covers nearly 75 per cent of its energy needs through imports.

In November 2012, mass demonstrations were held in Jordan in connection with a 50 per cent increase in fuel prices because of the growing state budget deficit of the country which reached $7.7 billion.
