Review of agricultural sector in Azerbaijan (for 2010)

2.2 percent decrease was recorded in the sectors of agriculture, forestry and fishing of Azerbaijan in 2010.

According to the State Statistics Committee, the decline in production in the fields of forestry, agriculture and fisheries are due to natural disasters, observed in the country in 2010.

However, despite the decline in agricultural production and fishing by 3880 million manat, the growth in livestock production, particularly meat was 7.1 percent, milk - 6.7 percent and wool - 2.4 percent.

The reduction was mostly recorded in the production of potatoes, cereals and eggs. Notable increases have occurred in the sphere of sugar beet production (33.6%), tobacco (24.3%), green tea (22%), cotton (17%).

The crop production fell by 8.9 percent in Azerbaijan in 2010.

So, according to the data provided by the State Statistics Committee, as a result of 2010, grain production totaled 2,000,900, which is 33 percent less than 2009. Sown area amounted to 966,700 hectares. Reduction in the acreage of these crops by 159,200 hectares compared to last year was the negative consequence of torrential rains, observed in 40 districts of the country.

The autumn-winter field planting work continues in Azerbaijan for 2011. About 1,017,800 hectares have already been cultivated, which is 2.6 percent more than in 2009. Grain has been planted in an area of 925,900 hectares, of which 915,300 hectares accounts for sown area of wheat (with the specific of 72.2 percent), barley - 254,700 hectares (27.8 percent).

The crops of grain rose by 0.7 percent compared to the same period of last year. In particular, the wheat was sown 0.2 percent more than the previous year, barley - 2.2 percent.

The total production of livestock rose by 6.1 percent In 2010 as compared to 2009.

440,000 tons of meat, 1,529,200 tons of milk, 1178.6 million eggs, 15,600 tons of wool were produced in Azerbaijan in 2010.

Compared to 2009, meat production grew by 7.1 percent, milk - 6.7 percent, and wool - 2.4 percent. Egg production declined by 2.5 percent because of the weakening or stopping of production in some poultry farms.

The total amount of agricultural production based on actual prices in 2010 amounted to 3.9 billion manat, which is 2.2 percent less than 2009. In particular, livestock grew 6.1 percent, while crop production fell by 8.9 percent. The reason for this was the spring floods in 40 districts of Azerbaijan, as a result which 50,000 hectares of cultivated land remained under water.

In 2010, production prices for agricultural products in Azerbaijan increased by 4.2 percent compared to the previous month (data by State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan), while in December it increased by 1.7 percent compared to November.
