(zaman) - Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said that the European Union could not solve the Cyprus problem impartially by its nature since Greek Cyprus had become member of the bloc.

Gul held a press briefing before his departure to Turkish Cyprus to attend the celebrations for the 23rd anniversary of the founding of the country, reports Trend.

The Turkish government has been supporting the Finnish plan on the Cyprus issue, Gul noted, stressing that a comprehensive solution to the problem must be on the grounds of the United Nations.

He underlined that there was no use bringing the elements of such a comprehensive settlement to the agenda of the European Union.

In response to another question, Gul remarked that Turkey has been working delicately on the so-called Armenian genocide issue, adding that solving the problem would take time.
