Interior ministry: Illegal surveillance devices seized in Georgian prisons

The Georgian Interior Ministry has seized some video and audio equipment illegally installed in the country’s jails, spokesperson for the ministry Nino Giorgobiani said at a special briefing today.

The Georgian Interior Ministry has seized some video and audio equipment illegally installed in the country's jails, spokesperson for the ministry Nino Giorgobiani said at a special briefing today.

She said that illegal surveillance was conducted by using this equipment and conversations of prisoners were wiretapped.

The equipment was found during the investigation of the case on the abuse of power of Georgian penitentiary system employees.

According to the Interior Ministry, this equipment was installed in Tbilisi, Batumi, Zugdidi and Kutaisi prisons during repair operations in 2006-2010. The equipment was completely dismantled.

At present, the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor's Office must find the individuals who have installed equipment for unauthorised surveillance.
