FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) participates in introduction of methods for the rational use of all types of forests, prevention of deforestation, restoration of degraded forests and a significant increase in the scope of work on reforestation in Uzbekistan, Trend reports citing Uzbek media.

Within the framework of the Week of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) held in Uzbekistan, a round table was organized on the topic "Climate change in Uzbekistan: causes, possible consequences and strategies to combat it".

It was noted that the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 13 is dedicated precisely to taking urgent measures to combat climate change and its consequences. In accordance with the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly No. 70, adopted at the UN Summit on Sustainable Development on June 14, 2015, as well as in order to implement the National Goals and Objectives for Sustainable Development for the period up to 2030, a number of works are being implemented in Uzbekistan.

FAO Natural Resources Expert Yvette Zenina noted in that it is equally important for FAO to both increase agricultural productivity and contribute to a sustainable environment and food systems.

Also, within the framework of the Week, a round table was held on the topic "Protection and restoration of terrestrial ecosystems, rational use of forests, combating desertification, stopping the process of loss of biodiversity", during which the parties discussed goal 15 in the field of sustainable development to protect and restore terrestrial ecosystems and promote their rational use, sustainable forest management, combating desertification, ending and reversing the process of land degradation and ending the process of biodiversity loss.

FAO forestry expert Ekrem Yazici noted that Sustainable Development Goal 15 covers a total of 10 targets. The first is to ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, mountainous and drylands, in accordance with the obligations arising from international agreements.

According to the information, in 2019, Uzbek State Forestry Committee created forests on an area of 501,000 hectares, in 2020 - on an area of 728,000 hectares. Also, on an area of 9,600 hectares in 2019 and 10,000 hectares in 2020, on the mountain and foothill rainfed lands of the forest fund, plantations of pistachios, almonds, walnuts were created, and effective use of land was established.

It is reported that the second objective is to promote the introduction of methods for the rational use of all types of forests, prevent deforestation, restore degraded forests and significantly increase the scale of reforestation.

Moreover, although Uzbekistan has undertaken to build forests on a total area of 500,000 hectares by 2030, forestry authorities in 2018-2021 carried out work to restore forest landscapes on an area of more than 2.1 million hectares. During this period, forests with a total area of 1,660 hectares were created on the dried bottom of the Aral Sea.
