Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has advised the Tunisian political groups to wisely restore security in their country, Mehr news agency reported.

Talking to reporters in Tehran on Saturday, Mehmanparast said, "We are keeping a close eye on internal developments in Tunisia and advise all political groups... to restore security there" and take measures that are in the best interest of the Tunisian people.

"What is important to us is fulfillment of the Tunisian people's demands in the best way as a country which can play an effective role in the Islamic world," he added.

Tunisia's capital remained under lockdown Saturday morning, a day after a popular rebellion forced the president to flee the country.

President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, 74, took his family to Jedda, Saudi Arabia, on Friday following weeks of violent street protests.

Tunisia's Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi, ordered security forces to maintain order, just hours after the president fled to Saudi Arabia.

The move came after almost a month of unrest in the North African country over unemployment and high prices.
