Iran’s Airports Company‎ (IAC) signed a multilateral memorandum of understanding with German companies for expansion of Iranian airports, while talks are underway with French and Italian firms for cooperation in Iran’s airport projects.

The IAC signed an MOU with Munich Airports, Frankfurt Airport and Dornier Consulting International GmbH on Jan. 18 for cooperation in aviation sector, IRIB news agency reported.

The deal covers cooperation in various fields, including training human resources, optimizing the airports’ capacity, commercialization of the airports, providing financial resources for development of infrastructures, modernizing IT and navigation infrastructures, airport operations management and airport development.

Rahmatollah Mahabadi, head of the IAC, said the German side will finance construction of Tabriz airport terminal as well as new airports in Chabahar and Ahwaz in BOT (build-operate-transfer) and BLT (build, lease, transfer) financing arrangements.

Iran is planning to overhaul all its airport equipment to enhance safety and security level, he added.

Meanwhile, Mehr news agency quoted Gholamhossein Bagherian, IAC deputy director for planning and supervision, as saying that construction of an airport in Chabahar is not profitable, but necessary strategically.

Bagherian added that the IAC has held good talks with French and Italian investors for developing airports and building new airport infrastructures.

He expressed hope that the talks will be concluded by March 2017.

Bagherian added that Iran will hold public tenders for investment in Ahwaz and Chabahar airports’ construction, forecasting that Chinese, German and Japanese investors will most likely take part in the projects.
