Azerbaijani Opposition Party Musavat to Support Only its Own Candidate

Azerbaijan, Baku, 5 August / Trend corr. E.Babayev / Sulhaddin Akpar, the Chairman of the Assembly of the Azerbaijani opposition party Musavat, considers unfounded the statements about the possible support of another candidate.

"Musavat cannot support another candidate. The Assembly has already made its decision," Akpar told Trend , commenting the statement by Rauf Arifoglu, chief editor of the Yeni Musavat newspaper and member of Musavat party, to nominate his candidature.

Azerbaijani will host the presidential elections on 15 October 2008. In October 2007, Musavat took a decision to participate in the presidential elections and nominated Isa Gambar's candidature. However, the party changed its decision in the meeting on 2 August. Party will not join the elections.

Arifoglu felt dissatisfaction with such a decision and wanted to nominate his candidature to the presidential post. At the same time, the Assembly's decision cannot lead to loses in the party as it was made jointly, according to Arifoglu.

"The decision was widely discussed with participation of journalists. Twenty seven members of the Assembly delivered speeches. As a result the issue was solved through open voting. Each member should respect Assembly's decision,' Akpar said.

Opposition party Musavat was founded in 1992. Isa Gambar, the present Chairman of the Party was the Ex-Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament (Milli Majlis) in 1992-1993 and the candidate nominated to the Presidential elections held in the country in 2003. Five MPs represents the Party in the Parliament of the Country.
