Uzbekistan and Ukraine plan to resume direct flights, the Minister of Transport, Chairman of Uzbekistan Airways, Ilkhom Makhkamov said at a press conference on April 28, Trend reports referring to Uzbek media.

According to Ilkhom Makhkamov, it is planned to resume direct flights between Uzbekistan and Ukraine in May, if nothing drastically changes with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We plan to operate flights two or three times a week. The Ukrainian side is offering UIA (Ukraine International Airlines) and SkyUp Airlines,” the head of the Ministry of Transport said.

In addition, starting in May, Uzbekistan Airways intends to cancel nine unprofitable flights to Paris, Rome, Milan, Amritsar, Mumbai, Bangkok, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta as part of the transition to a new business model, which will save the airline $12.3 million.

According to the minister, these directions were low-profitable for many years and negatively affected the financial position of the airline.

“The cancelation of the mentioned flights can be associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and with the new strategy of the airline. If there is a need, tourism potential with this region, then we always have the opportunity to deliver charter flights and take people out from there,” Ilkhom Makhkamov said.
