ICARDA, Azerbaijan combat yellow rust disease

International Centre for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) will assist Azerbaijan in combating yellow rust diseases of grain corps, the Agriculture Ministry's Scientific-Agrarian Centre said on Feb. 2.

"This disease is too dangerous and it is largely observed in grain crops in our country," the centre said.

ICARDA sent three specialists to Azerbaijan with this purpose. They have to develop a project focusing on preventing spread of disease areola, the centre's employee said.

"Yellow rust strikes wheat, rye, barley, couch grass, brome and other cereals but it seriously damages wheat. The disease develops in wheat sowing in highland regions of the North Caucasus, Transcaucasia, Central Asia, Altai land, in different years in Polesye and Forest-steppe of Ukraine, in Belarus and Baltic countries.

ICARDA was founded in 1977 and is one of 15 centers located all over the world and supported by Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research.

The organization with central office in Aleppo (Syria) cooperates with national, regional and international institutions, universities, NGOs, ministries in developing countries and famous research institutions in the industrial countries.
