BP Spends $10mln to Improve Drinking Water Supply along ВТС and SCP

Azerbaijan, Baku, 25 July / Trend corr. E.Ismayilov/ BTC Co and South Caucasus Pipeline companies spent $525,000 for program on improvement of drinking water supply in accordance with their public investment program, ВР Azerbaijan, operator of Вaku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BТС) pipe and technical operator of the Shah Deniz project, said. The program was commenced in 2005.

The project covered the communities most of all suffering from water shortage. Within the program, 11 water treatment units were put into operation in the Kurdamir, Ujar and Agdash regions of Azerbaijan.

Management structures in the form of limited liability companies were established for each unit to provide rational and transparent quality management of water and earnings within the program. Centre of Humanitarian and Social Aid NGO is implementing the program.

Another project within public investments for the communities residing along the two pipes was completed in May 2008. Implementation of Economic Enlightenment program commenced in 2006 to complete in May 2008, with investments comprising $140,000.

Since the start of the CIP in 2003 BP on behalf of its co-venturers has spent about $10 million in total for all phases of their CIPs. The target area begins at the Sangachal Terminal and ends at Agstafa covering 13 regions of Azerbaijan along the BTC and SCP route. To date a total of more than 300 infrastructure development initiatives have been implemented in these areas through mobilization, capacity building trainings and micro-projects. These have included 54 educational facilities newly-constructed or rehabilitated, 14 of these have been computerized, 75 potable and irrigation water supply systems, about 221 km of roads and 42 medical facilities newly-constructed or rehabilitated and 13,789 micro loans issued.
