(CIHAN) - Joost Lagendijk, the Turkish- EU Joint Parliament Commission Co-Chairman has said that the Finnish plan on Cyprus is less likely to be successful and that Cyprus is a matter of the United Nations, reports Trend.
Lagendijk, who has been in Istanbul to attend the World Economic Forum, told on Thursday in a live interview with Turkish NTV channel he had concerns on that the Finnish formula on the decades-long problem would succeed. He added that the deadlock on the eastern Mediterranean island was a matter to be debated at the UN.
Saying that there were many speculations on the suspension of Turkey's accession talks with the European Union (EU) in certain chapters, Lagendijk remarked that not all the negotiation chapters are expected to be stalled. He went on to say that he believed the negotiations would continue on the remaining chapters after seven or eight chapters are suspended.
"If there won't be a solution on Dec. 11, finding one on Dec. 14 or 15 will not be any easier", Lagendijk stressed, "however, EU will not choose suspension of the talks".
Commenting on Article 301, the notorious article of Turkish Penal Code, Lagendijk noted that there could be tensions lest there was a positive outcome at the EU Foreign Affairs ministers' summit and that the Article 301, was a European issue as well.
He also opined that it is important for Turkey to act on the Article 301 as it would prevent easing the opposition to Turkey's membership to the EU.
