Romania arrests 18 Iranian migrants

Romanian border police on Wednesday detained 18 illegal Iranian migrants, seven of them minors, at the border with Hungary, and made two arrests in connection with the case, DPA reported.

The Iranians attempted to enter Hungary at the Baba Veche crossing, near Timisoara, hiding in a cargo bay of a truck, the Mediafax news agency reported. Two Romanian citizens suspected of guiding the migrants were arrested, the report said.

Romania, a European Union member since 2007, expects to join the European passport-free Schengen zone in 2010. It recently came into the focus of an international row over migrants, when France began expelling Roma who illegally settled there.
