Syrian opposition activists say at least 13 people, most of them children, have died in a government airstrike that hit a bus in the country's east, AP reported.

The Local Coordination's Committees group says the bus was carrying civilians traveling to the capital, Damascus, from the eastern Deir el-Zour province when it was struck in the village of Shoula on Wednesday.

The group says 13 people were killed.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the death toll at 16, including 10 children. It says the death toll was likely to rise because there were many wounded.

Syrian government airstrikes frequently target opposition-held areas of the country. Eastern Syria is almost entirely under the control of the militant Islamic State group, an al-Qaida breakaway.
