By Elnur Baghishov - Trend:

By the decision of the Iranian government, wheat will be imported, Iran’s Agriculture Minister Mahmoud Hojjati said at a meeting with representatives of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, Trend reports citing Tasnim news agency.

Hojjati noted that wheat will be imported by Iran’s Government Trading Corporation and the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade.

Even though wheat production in Iran increased during the current sowing year, for some reasons, the volumes of wheat purchased from farmers were even lower than last Iranian year (March 21, 2018 – March 21, 2019), the minister added.

Hojjati said that the farmers refused to sell wheat to Iran’s Government Trading Corporation.

Though it was suggested to increase the price of 1 kg of wheat by 50 percent in Iran compared to the price of 1 kg of wheat last sowing year, when it stood at 17,000 rials (about 40 cents), the price has been increased to 22,500 rials (to about 53 cents). This has caused mixed reaction of the farmers.

Iran has produced 14 million tons of wheat this sowing year.
