Four terrorists who planned to carry out bombings in the northwestern Iranian city of Mahabad have been arrested by Iran's security forces, Press TV reported.

"All the arrested [individuals] are members of one family... three of them were arrested in Mahabad," the city's Prosecutor Samad Hazrati told IRNA on Wednesday.

"Four Kalashnikovs were confiscated from one individual who was trying to escape Mahabad... [He] was severely injured and arrested during a clash and exchange of gunfire with security forces."

In September, a bomb explosion in Mahabad left 12 people dead and at least 80 others injured.

The terrorist attack took place where people were watching a military parade. The bomb was planted inside a pine tree near the site of the parade.

Iranian police identified and arrested the group behind the terrorist attack. Some of the perpetrators were killed by Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.

On December 15, another terrorist attack took place at the Imam Hussein mosque in Chabahar in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan where people were commemorating the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, Hussein (PBUH).

At least 38 mourners were killed and more than 89 others including women and children were injured.

Iran says the perpetrators behind the Chabahar terrorist attack were trained and equipped by foreign elements beyond the country's eastern borders in Pakistan.
