Iran honors abducted defense official

Iran Materials 16 December 2011 12:34 (UTC +04:00)

Iran held a ceremony of honoring the country's former deputy defense minister, Alireza Asgari, who has been abducted in Turkey in 2007, Press TV reported.

The ceremony was held in the Iranian capital city of Tehran on Thursday.

No official comments about Asgari's whereabouts have yet been made, but his family members and Iranian authorities believe Israel's agency, Mossad, is the main suspect behind his abduction.

Asgari's family has repeatedly called on the Turkish government to act and follow up his case.

The former Iranian deputy defense minister disappeared mysteriously in Turkey four years ago and is believed to have been transferred to Israel after abduction.

In 2010 Tehran Times reported that Asgari died in Israeli prison. The Eurasia Review website later claimed that a source within the "inner circle" of the Israeli defense ministry said Asgari's death could have been a murder and not suicide.

On July 4, 1982, four Iranian diplomats were kidnapped by militia and Israeli forces at an inspection point in northern Lebanon. Israel claims that Ahmad Motevaselian, Seyyed Mohsen Mousavi, Taqi Rastegar Moqaddam and Kazem Akhavan were abducted by the Lebanese Forces group, now headed by Samir Geagea, and were killed shortly after their abduction.
