Interior minister: Over 50.4 million Iranians eligible to vote

More than 50.4 million Iranians are eligible to vote in the upcoming presidential election, the Mehr News Agency quoted Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar as saying.

Over 1.6 million can vote for the first time, he added.

Some 130,000 balloting centres will be set up across the country, he said, adding that 285 centres will be also set up for Iranians living overseas.

The former vice-president Mohammad Reza Aref, the Guardian Council approved MP Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili, Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei, Hassan Rohani, the director of the Strategic Research Centre of the Expediency Council, Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, former Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Gharazi, and former Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Velayati are the eight candidates who will compete in the presidential race.

Iran will hold the eleventh presidential election on June 14, 2013.

Voters will select the successor to the current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is not able to participate in the elections for a third term according to the country's constitutional laws.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election and the Guardian Council vets the candidates for qualifications.
