In order to ensure iodized salt for the Azerbaijani population, a plant will be built in the Masazir settlement on the Absheron peninsula. Its commissioning is scheduled for the first half of 2010, the Economic Development Ministry said.
Seven hectares were granted to the Azerbaijani Salt Production Unit for the plant's construction. The PU was established by the Azersun Holding and Azerbaijan Investment Company (AIC). AIC invested 1.9 million manat in the project.
Construction works are conducted by the Turkish company Inova. The equipment is supplied by the Swiss company Evoterm.
The plant has been built near Masazir Lake from where salt will be collected in the initial phases. Supplies from Turkmenistan are also envisaged in the future.
Due to the high demand for iodized salt, production will double to 200 tons per day.
