MASkargo Sdn Bhd, the air cargo unit of Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) plans to make Baku a hub for expanding its access to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region, Business Times reported.

MASkargo CEO Mohd Yunus Idris said after signing the memorandum of cooperation between MASkargo and Azerbaijan's Silk Way that with Baku as a transit centre, the company hopes to develop bilateral relations and build cooperative framework in the cargo business, "given the country's growing economy and potential in air transportation."

According to Idris, the signing of the memorandum is a step for MASkargo to weather the air freight market slowdown this year as Baku is a strategic trade route between Europe and Asia.

The memorandum paves the way for greater collaboration between the carriers on cargo space agreements, ground handling and line maintenance.

According to Idris, MASkargo started flying to Baku in late December 2012 but did not carry any cargo. "We are looking to carrying goods such as electronics and garments to Baku," he said.
