Two Iranian citizens, Nijat Yusif Mehran (born 1985) and Ismayil Jamzemi (born 1984) were detained for violating Azerbaijan's marine borders, the State Border Guard Service said in a message on March 9.
The Coast Guard of the State Border Service received information on March 8 that an unknown floating vessel, violating the state border entered the state waters of Azerbaijan in the direction of the territory of the Astara region.
According to reports, the patrol boats chased down the vessel, and eventually forced it to stop, following warning fire shots. Following the detainment, the vessel was inspected.
During the inspection, the above-named citizens of Iran were detained. The border violators had two smartphones, a "GARMİN" GPS device, a flashlight, a knife and nine tablets of tramadol.
Further investigation revealed that the mentioned group was involved in alcohol smuggling attempt in Baligchilar village of Lankaran district on Feb. 15 2018.
Operative and investigative measures are underway to detain other members of the criminal group.
