AGO GROUP REPRESENTATIVES MET WITH HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS

On June 30, human rights defenders, Saida Godjamanli, Eldar Zeynalov and Leyla Yunus met with representatives of the AGO group of the Council of Europe, being on a visit in Azerbaijan. During the meeting, issues, related to human rights defense, political prisoners, establishment of joint working group between representatives of the state bodies and human rights activists, democratization of the upcoming parliamentary elections, pre-election situation, interrelations between authorities and opposition have been discussed, Godjamanli told Trend.

According to Godjamanli, the working group made a certain work towards release of political prisoners. She also noted, that there are several sick persons held in confinement and their fate will be decided at the next meeting of the working group.

Human rights activists stressed the significance of lifting restrictions for the NGO’s participation in elections, as well as introducing changes to the Election Code, formation of election commissions on parity basis.

The AGO group members noted, in their turn, that they would bring these problems to the notice of President Ilham Aliyev during the meeting with him.
