On the eve of the first anniversary of the Georgia-Ossetia war Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis urges both sides of the conflict to refrain from repetition of military operations, which would cause new disasters, the official statement of the Council of Europe said.

"Both Georgia and Russia are the CE member-states and they are marking the first anniversary of their conflict with rhetoric and tension. This is how the shooting started a year ago. At a time when the wounds of the past have not even started to heal, they should both remember the lost lives and destruction caused by the war, and they should both realize that any renewed hostilities will inevitably bring new deaths and more devastation," Terry Davis said.

Military actions launched in the territory of unrecognized republic of South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Georgian troops entered the capital of South Ossetia - Tskhinvali. Afterwards, Russian troops occupied the city and drove Georgian military men back to Georgia. Russia recognized independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, official parts of Georgia on August 26 and established diplomatic relations with them on September 9.
