BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 3. France is using force to suppress the Comoros people's quest for independence, Mayotte Independence Committee member Ahmed Tabet said, Trend reports.
Speaking at an international conference organized by the Baku Initiative Group in Baku, Tabet condemned France’s ongoing occupation of the island of Mayotte.
"We want to be independent. The Comoros is recognized by the UN as an independent state. But for half a century, France has continued its illegal occupation, defying international law," Tabet declared.
The conference, titled "France's Illegal Occupation of the Mayotte Island of the Comoros Union," gathers a wide range of participants, including political figures from Mayotte, scholars, human rights activists, NGO leaders, and members of political parties advocating for the island's return to the Comoros Union.
Discussions revolve around the French colonization's backstory, the repercussions of France's occupation of Mayotte, geopolitical and economic motives, as well as the hidden agendas driving France's colonial policies.
The event also addresses the role of international organizations regarding Mayotte's status.
