Chairman of Television and Radio Broadcasting Council Reports on Possibility of Suspending Broadcasting of Russian RTR Channel in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Ilhamgizi / The decision of the Television and Radio Broadcasting Council to suspend broadcasting of foreign channels in Azerbaijan through local frequencies must be implemented, the Chairman of the Council, Nushiravan Maharramli, reported on 2 July.

The council will hold a meeting on 9 July, where it will discuss suspension of broadcasting of foreign channels, as well as rational use of vacated frequencies. Appropriate decisions will be made.

Taking into consideration world practice, the council made a decision on broadcasting of foreign channels in Azerbaijan only via cable television and satellite. The broadcasting of the Turkish Кanal D was suspended in January and broadcasting of Russian ORT, RTR and Turkish STV will be suspended on 10 July.

Maharamli stressed that the working group was holding negotiations in order to enable broadcasting of RTR. "For the time being the situation is as following: the broadcasting of ORT should be stopped. As to RTR, talks are in progress. If the Russian side provides for conditions for broadcasting of Azerbaijani AzTV in its territory, then the conditions for broadcasting of RTR in Azerbaijan will also be provided," Maharramli said.

According to Maharramli, in the event of an agreement not being reached by 9 July, broadcasting of the RTR will be stopped.
