Iran annually exports over $800 million worth of electricity to neighboring countries, head of Iran Electrical Industry Syndicate's Exports Development Committee, Payam Bagheri, said on Jan. 21, the Iranian IRIB News Agency reported.
"The figure can be increased in the future," Bagheri said.
"Iran's electricity industry is currently 95 per cent self-sufficient," he added.
He went on to note that Iran has the potential to become an energy hub in the region.
Iran's electricity production capacity is around 70,000 megawatt hours.
Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.
Iran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.
