The Nabucco gas pipeline project is one of the European steps, taken to diversify energy resources and remove dependence on one route, supply via which could derail at any moment, Iraq's chargé d'affaires in Kazakhstan Khaldun Al - Jami told Trend .

"With regards to Iraq's participation in the project, it is evident that as exporter of energy resources, Iraq will work on diversification of its exports through any project," Al-Jami said.

According to the ambassador, the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki confirmed the participation of Iraq in the project during his visit to Turkey, at the time of signing the agreement on Nabucco.

"But, in fact, today the level of gas production in Iraq is not on the desired level compared to its proven and preserved reserves. The main reason is deterioration of infrastructure and lack of qualifications of oil companies due to difficult conditions, which the country experiences today," Al-Jami said.

At present, Iraq is making serious efforts to strengthen the capacity of the oil companies to meet growing world demand for hydrocarbons, as well as to increase the financial resources of Iraq for the country's economic recovery, the ambassador added.

Today, Iraq tries to diversify the sources of its exports. Currently Iraq exports oil through the southern ports, as well as through the Turkish port where the oil is delivered through pipelines laid to Turkish Port of Ceyhan. Also there are effective plans to revive the previous export lines through Syria (Kirkuk - Baniyas), as well as to study new outlets in other countries, Al-Jami added.
