Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 23

Trend:

Iran plans to install technology on all new and replacement gas pipelines to detect leaks and damage, the CEO of Iranian Gas Engineering and Development Company said.

Fiber-optic lines will be installed along all of its new and replacement gas pipelines in a move to help prevent pipeline damage and leaks, Hassan Montazer Torbati said, according to ISNA news agency.

The new system will send early warnings of pressure changes or vibrations that might indicate a leak or stress on the pipeline caused by construction work, changes in geology, or the impact of a broken water main.

Iran sits on the world’s fourth-largest oil and second-largest gas reserves, and is among the world’s top 10 oil and top five natural gas producers.
