BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 30. A delegation of Mā'OHI Nui (French Polynesia) led by Victor Maamaatuaiahutapu visited the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan, the parliament told Trend.
Initially, the group was shown around the Azerbaijani parliament's plenary session hall.
The delegation first visited the Victory Corner, a tribute to Azerbaijan's triumph in the Second Karabakh War. During their meeting, Ali Huseynli, First Vice-Speaker of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and Chair of the Committee for Law Policy and State-Building, extended a warm welcome to the guests on behalf of Parliament Speaker Sahiba Gafarova. He highlighted Azerbaijan's steadfast opposition to neo-colonialism on the global stage, underscoring President Ilham Aliyev's unwavering commitment to this cause as a cornerstone of Azerbaijan's foreign policy. Huseynli emphasized that during Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement, significant strides were made in forming a robust coalition against neo-colonialism and supporting the liberation efforts of oppressed peoples.
During the meeting, support was voiced for Mā'OHI Nui's ongoing struggle against French colonialism. Referencing the UN General Assembly resolution on the self-determination of French Polynesia from May 17, 2013, Huseynli lamented the imperfect nature of international legal mechanisms, which hinder former colonies from fully breaking free from French dominance. France was highlighted as a leading proponent of neo-colonial policies, actively backing the occupation of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia for nearly three decades. Discussing Azerbaijan's liberation efforts, the First Vice-Speaker emphasized the nation's commitment to implementing four UN Security Council resolutions independently, safeguarding its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Addressing the meeting, Chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee for International Relations and Interparliamentary Ties Samad Seyidov criticized France for its historical colonial legacy, accusing the nation of masking its actions under the guise of democracy and human rights. Seyidov stressed Azerbaijan's own history of occupation and deprivation, calling for an end to France's colonial policies.
Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, the head of the Mā'OHI Nui delegation emphasized the significance of their visit to Azerbaijan. He condemned France's centuries-old colonial policies, citing democracy suppression and human rights violations in Mā'OHI Nui. Despite France's attempts to hinder their struggle for independence, he affirmed the unwavering determination of the Mā'OHI Nui people to continue their fight for freedom.
During discussions, heartfelt appreciation was extended to the Azerbaijani state, its leadership, and citizens for their steadfast support of the Mā'OHI Nui people. It was emphasized that the meetings and extensive exchanges during the visit would significantly contribute to the ongoing struggle against the centuries-old French colonial policies endured by the nation.
The meeting was also attended by Rustam Mahmudov, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Parliament, Abbas Abbasov, executive director of Baku Initiative Group, and other officials.
