World Bank’s Mission Supervises Azerbaijan’s Water Project

Khalilova / The mission of the World Bank headed by Anders Rodi arrived in Baku to supervise the process of development of the technical economic basis (TEB) on the project on improving the water supply and sewerage system in small regions costing $310mln, the Baku representative of the Bank reported on 11 October. TEB is developed in ten small regions.

The credit agreement was signed on 17 August 2007. The project has not yet come into force. The World Bank's experts will work until 14 October.

The project was approved at the Council of Directors of the World Bank on 14 June 2007. The project includes three components.

Investments in water supply infrastructure and sewerage systems are envisaged in the first component. The project covers twenty regions of Azerbaijan including Agstafa, Bilasuvar, Geranboy, Gabala, Guba, Saatli, Oguz, Khanlar, Tovuz, Zakatala, Hajigabul, Kazakx, Gakh, Mingachevir, Sabirabad, Samukh, Shamkir, Tartar, and Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

It is planning to render technical assistance for the development of the general plan on development of the water supply system in Baku City and Absheron Peninsula at the second stage of the component.

The third component includes institutional modernization of Azersu company by introducing international standards of financial accounting for improving the billing system.

Implementation of the project is expected to continue until 2012.
