Production of pome fruit decreases in Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 16

Production of pome fruit reached 52,100 tons in 2019 in Georgia, which is 44.2 percent less than in the same period of the previous year, Trend reports citing data of the Georgian National Statistics Service (Geostat)

As reported, production of stone fruit amounted to 38,600 tons (28.7 percent less compared to the previous year), production of nuts - 31,700 tons (increasing by 37.2 percent), production of subtropical fruit - 20,400 tons (increasing by 27.5 percent) and production of citruses - 64,400 tons (decreasing by 2.9 percent).

Meanwhile, in 2019 production of grapes increased by 13.8 percent year-on-year reaching 295,600 tons.

According to Geostat, the volume of exports of fruits and nuts from Georgia in 2019 amounted to $121.88 million in monetary terms.

The share of fruits and nuts in Georgia’s total exports during this period ($3.7 billion) amounted to 3.2 percent.

The major part of exports accounts for hazelnuts - $63.34 million, tangerines - $18.45 million, peaches - $12.48 million, bananas - $5.36 million, apples - $4.59 million, persimmon - $4.20 million, oranges - $1.51 million, pistachios - $1.45 million, walnuts - $1.36 million, and blueberries and other berries - $0.98 million.

Fruit exports grew by 17.5 percent in 2019, as compared to 2018.
