Turkmenistan, Oman interested in establishing commission on economic co-op

Turkmenistan and Oman are interested in establishing a joint intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation, Trend reports with reference to Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The discussions took place during a videoconference between Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Oman Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi.

The above-mentioned commission can contribute to the promotion of trade relations, including in the field of oil and gas, chemical and textile industries, agriculture and others.

The ministers also noted the effectiveness of cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries, as well as the importance of developing the legal framework for bilateral cooperation.

The parties pointed out the need to develop educational and cultural contacts. The possibilities of expanding cooperation and exchange of experience in the field of healthcare and medicine were considered.

There were also discussions on cooperation in the transport sector. Thus, the parties noted that both countries have a unique geographical location and are important links in the creation of international transport and transit corridors in the North-South and East-West directions.

One clear example of partnership in this context is the Agreement on the establishment of the international transport and transit corridor Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman. The parties spoke about the relevance of this partnership for strengthening cooperation between the countries and regional economic integration.

The Agreement on the establishment of the international transport and transit corridor Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman was signed in Ashgabat on April 25, 2011.

The creation of the transport corridor was initiated by the president of Uzbekistan in October 2010.
