BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 30. Uzbekistan will receive a $4.987 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Trust Fund for the Integrated Natural Resources Management for Improved Ecosystem Conservation and Biodiversity Preservation project, a source at the GEF told Trend.
According to the GEF, this project, led by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), focuses on protecting water sources, agriculture, and the environment in Uzbekistan's Amu Darya and Syr Darya river basins. It comprises five interconnected components aimed at finding solutions to environmental challenges and strengthening ecosystems.
The project is dedicated to ensuring the wise usage of land and water resources to prevent environmental degradation. It also explores various farming methods and endeavors to reintroduce diverse plant and animal species to agricultural areas.
Additionally, it addresses issues such as soil degradation and water scarcity by promoting improved irrigation techniques and water management practices.
In addition to this initiative, Uzbekistan is engaged in other projects supported by the GEF, including Strengthening Integrated Water Management in Amu Darya, Zarafshon, and Panj River Basins, Strengthening Integrated Water Management in Syr Darya and Narin River Basins, and Coordinated Approach for Land Restoration in Vulnerable Ecosystems of Central Asia.
GEF is a coalition aimed at combating biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution while fostering the health of both land and ocean ecosystems. Through its financial support, the GEF empowers developing countries to tackle intricate environmental issues and make strides towards global sustainability objectives.
