DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, April 30. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Swiss government are going to contribute 2.7 million euros to finish water projects in Tajikistan's Fayzobod city, Trend reports.
According to the bank, this money will be used to improve water and wastewater systems in Fayzobod and 14 nearby communities. The funds will be channeled through Khojagii Manziliyu Kommunali local utility, benefiting over 30,000 residents in Fayzobod.
This financial support consists of a sovereign loan of up to 1.35 million euros from the EBRD and an anticipated capital grant of 1.35 million euros from the Swiss government through the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
This investment will build upon a previous one made in 2022. The project aims to tackle issues with crucial drinking water and wastewater infrastructure and promote sustainable water usage by reducing water losses.
Negotiations during EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso's visit to
Tajikistan led to the agreement.
She emphasized the bank's commitment to allocating further
resources to strengthen Tajikistan's resilience to climate change.
This includes improving water networks and infrastructure to reduce
water use. Upon project completion, the local populace will benefit
from repaired networks and enhanced sanitation.
Additionally, SECO will provide 200,000 euros for procurement and
construction monitoring.
As of February 29, 2024, the EBRD's current project portfolio in
Tajikistan was 507 million euros, with 72 active projects scheduled
for completion. Overall, the EBRD committed 947 million euros to
168 projects around the country.
