а) Oil and Gas Production
Azerbaijan produced 17.54 million tons of oil and gas condensate in January-May 2016, which is by 0.7 percent less than in the same period of 2015, said the report of the country’s State Statistics Committee (SSC).
In 2015, Azerbaijan produced 41.69 million tons of oil and gas condensate versus 41.9 million tons in 2014.
The main part of produced oil accounted for Azerbaijan’s Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) block of oil and gas fields.
Production of tank gas was 7.8 billion cubic meters in January-May 2016, which is by 9.9 percent less than in the same period of 2015, according to the SSC.
Tank gas production was 19.72 billion cubic meters in 2015 in Azerbaijan versus 18.7 billion cubic meters in 2014.
- Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR produced 2.65 billion cubic meters of gas from the country’s offshore and onshore fields using its own funds in January-May 2016 compared to 2.87 billion cubic meters in the same period 2015, said SOCAR in a message.
In addition to its own production, SOCAR also gets gas from Shah Deniz and Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (associated gas) fields by developing these fields in cooperation with foreign partners.
The total volume of gas produced from these fields and independently developed ones was 12.47 billion cubic meters in January-May 2016 versus 12.35 billion cubic meters in January-May 2015.
- SOCAR produced 3.16 million tons of oil from the country’s offshore and onshore fields in January-May 2016, as compared to 3.46 million tons in the same period of 2015, SOCAR said in a message.
SOCAR produces oil from offshore and onshore fields of Azerbaijan using its own funds.
A part of this oil is processed at refineries in Baku, while the other part is exported via the Baku-Novorossiysk and the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipelines.
- SOCAR carried out drilling operations in the volume of 42,490 meters in Jan.-May 2016 versus 43,920 meters during the same period of 2015, SOCAR’s message said.
Some 42,224 meters out of the total drilling work carried out in Jan.-May 2016, accounted for production drilling, and the rest 269 meters– for exploratory drilling.
Nineteen new wells were commissioned during the reporting period.
- About 3.68 billion Azerbaijani manats were invested in Azerbaijan’s oil and gas sphere in January-May 2016, which is by 33.3 percent more than in the same period of 2015, says the report of the country’s State Statistical Committee.
b) Processing
Azerbaijan produced 1.08 million tons of oil products in January-May 2016 as compared to 2.74 million tons in the same period 2015, says the report.
Currently, due to the increased fuel consumption in Azerbaijan, the country’s state oil company SOCAR is conducting a work to modernize the existing processing capacities.
During the reporting period, Azerbaijan produced 471,000 tons of motor gasoline, which is 10.4 percent less than in January-May 2015.
Below is the summary table of oil products’ output in Azerbaijan:

The country produced 23,200 tons of propylene during that period, which is 13.3 percent less than in January-May 2015.
Some 29,000 tons of barium sulfate were produced in Azerbaijan in January-May 2016, which is 24.6 percent more than in the first five months of 2015.
The report also says the country produced 4,500 tons of isopropyl alcohol in January-May 2016, which is 0.7 percent less than in the same period 2015.
However, Azerbaijan saw a decrease in the production of other major types of chemical products in January-May 2016.

3. Electricity
Azerbaijan’s power plants generated 9.3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in January-May 2016, or 7 percent less than in the same period in 2015, the report said.
During the reporting period, commercial electricity accounted for 8.9 billion kilowatt hours of the total volume of electricity production, or 6.8 percent less than in January-May 2015.
Thermal power plants accounted for 8 billion kilowatt hours of the total volume of commercial electricity production in January-May 2016, or 8.9 percent less than in the same period in 2015.
During the reporting period, Azerbaijan’s hydro power plants generated 822 million kilowatt hours of commercial electricity, or 15.9 percent more than in January-May 2015.
This is while the wind farms and solar power plants in the country produced 7.9 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 20.8 million kilowatt hours of electricity, respectively, in January-May 2016.
Azerenergy JSC is the main producer of electricity in Azerbaijan. It has over 200 substations with a capacity of 500, 330, 220 and 110 kilovolt amperes, as well as 10 hydro power plants and 14 thermal power plants.
At present, the generation capacity of Azerbaijan's power supply system is 7,200 megawatts. This allows generating around 24 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually.
