(dpa) - The United States has evacuated more than 170 Americans from Georgia amid the escalating fighting between Russia and Georgia, the US State Department said Monday.

The Americans were taken in two convoys on Sunday and Monday to neighbouring Armenia to escape the violence that erupted last week, said Edgar Vasquez, a State Department spokesman.

The US embassy in Tbilisi was considering whether to arrange for a third convoy in the event more Americans want to leave, he said. The State Department does not know the number of US citizens that have left Georgia on their own, he said.

The State Department said on Saturday it would pay for dependents of US embassy personnel to leave.
