We will Participate with Unified Candidate in Presidential Elections: Co-chair of Azerbaijani Opposition Bloc

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend I.Alizade / Azerbaijani opposition bloc Azadlyg will participate in the 2008 presidential elections with a unified candidate, Ali Aliyev, co-chairman of Azadlyg bloc, and also the chairman of the Citizens and Development Party, said in Baku on 8 October.

"If Azaglyg bloc participates in the presidential elections, the definition of a unified candidate is not a problem. Bloc will solve this issue easily," Aliyev said.

Two parties and one political movement enter the Azadlyg bloc. These are the Popular Front of Azerbaijan Party (PFAP), the Citizens and Development Party (CDP) and the Movement of National Unity (MNU). Ali Kerimli, the chairman of PFAP, and Lala Shovket the leader of the MNU, claim at nominating their candidature to the presidency. Political observers consider that Kerimli and Shovket will not go to compromise in the issue of a unified candidate and it might lead to collapse of the bloc.

The leadership of Azadlyg said that if changes are not injected in the election legislation of the country and elections commissions are not formed on parity basis, they will not participate in the elections. According to Aliyev, the bloc will continue its activities in this connection by spring of 2008.

"После этого примем решение участвовать или нет в президентских выборах", - сказал Алиев.

"Afterwards, we will decide whether to participate in the elections," Aliyev said.
