Council of Europe and EU to Assist  South Caucasus Countries in Holding Free and Fair Elections

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend K.Ramazanova / As a result of 25th quadripartite meeting between the EU and the Council of Europe in Strasburg, the Council of Europe and the European Union decided to implement a Joint Programme on Fair and Free elections in the South Caucasus and Moldova (2008-2009).

They agreed on the usefulness of joint actions aimed at assisting countries in setting up and implementing a sound legal framework for elections, in ensuring free access to media with fair coverage during election campaigns.

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will take place on 15 October 2008 and the presidential elections in Armenia in spring of the next year. In 2008 parliamentary and presidential elections will take place in Georgia.

Moreover, the participants agreed on the significance of regional co-operation as a tool for the promotion of the human rights, democracy and the rule of law, especially in areas of post-conflict situations and "frozen conflicts".
