Azerbaijani police seize large consignment of drugs

A large consignment of narcotics was seized after being smuggled into Azerbaijan from Iran.

The Astara Region Police Department received information that unknown individuals were attempting to smuggle drugs into the country on Feb. 13, the police department told Trend on Feb. 14.

An operation was launched in the region.

At 04:00 on Feb. 13, two unknown individuals got out of their car to load four bags of narcotics hidden on the Caspian shore into their trunk. When they saw the police officers nearby, they got back into their car and drove toward them. Despite the officers' warning fire, they sped up and headed toward Lankaran.

As the roads were muddy, the car flipped over after hitting a tree on the roadside.

The officers found 40 kilograms of marijuana in four sacks and 40 parcels of drugs in the car.

Abbas Abbasov, 41, and Mammad Hasanov, 48 were taken to the central hospital.

Hasanov was then taken to police department as he only suffered light injuries.

Abbasov was sent to Baku and is in serious condition.

The case is under investigation.

The National Security Ministry prevented 50 kilogram of marijuana from being smuggled into Azerbaijan.
