The National Alliance Party of Georgia proposes to take steps to deprive Russia of the right to veto in the UN Security Council. Tbilisi must make use of Georgia's right, as prescribed in the UN regulations, as an UN member to ensure that Russia, as a state in conflict with Georgia, to be deprived of the right to veto in the UN Security Council's decisions concerning Georgia.
Georgia's National Alliance Party believes that Georgia, under provisions in the UN Charter, should inform the UN Security Council or General Assembly about the dispute between Georgia and Russia, as a country which is conducting war in Georgian territory under the pretext of protecting their citizens.
"In so doing, Georgia should officially state to the UN and UN countries the fact that Russia is a party in the dispute with Georgia. On the basis of these facts and additionally the 3rd paragraph of Article 27 in the UN Charter, which states that countries involved in conflict should abstain from voting when making decisions on topics included in Chapter VI of the UN Charter, Georgia should also ask the UN Security Council not to give Russia the right to veto on issues concerning Georgia and the Russian-Georgian war while the dispute is between Russia and Georgia is unsolved. Russia must not have the right to veto on such decisions," representatives of National Alliance Party said.
By the aforementioned legal procedure, Georgia will be able to prevent the suppression of the UN and the UN Observer Mission's involvement in solving the conflict in Georgia, the alliance reported.
"Today we call all parts of the current Georgian administration to take the aforementioned step. If the step is not taken, it would be viewed as a betrayal of the people," the party said.
