Hearings are expected to be held in Baku with participation of candidates for the post of General Secretary of the Council of Europe (CE), according to the report of the activity of the Bureau and the Standing Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
Taking into account the resolution of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, a decision was made in Paris on March 6 to invite candidates for Secretary General of the Council of Europe for the hearing in Baku on May 22. This decision was made at the bureau meeting as part of Azerbaijan's chairmanship in the CE Committee of Ministers, according to the report.
It should be stressed that three candidates put forward their candidacy for the post of CE Secretary General, namely, Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland (Norway), Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger (Germany) and Jean-Claude Mignon (France).
Jagland and Leutheusser -Schnarrenberger gained the highest number of votes as a result of voting on April 7. These two candidates will be introduced according to the procedure of elections for the post of secretary-general.
It will announce the name of the CE new secretary general for the next five years during the spring session on June 23-27.
Jagland has held the post of CE Secretary General since October 2009.
