At present there are 1.2 million motor vehicles in Azerbaijan and this number increases by 10 per cent annually, head of the chair at Azerbaijan Technical University, Sulhaddin Gozalov said on Nov. 19.
He made the remarks at an event held on Tuesday in connection with the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims at the International Press Centre.
According to him, the death toll in road accidents in Azerbaijan over the past three years exceeded the number of victims of other accidents.
"The number of victims of road accidents in peacetime in Azerbaijan exceeds the number of people killed on the front line. Despite the fact that the number of cars in Azerbaijan has doubled over the past 10 years, the number of victims of road accidents during the year stood at about 1000," Gozalov said. "The fact that the number of victims does not increase makes us happy on the one hand, but on the other, we are deeply concerned about so many victims. Death of one person in a car accident is grief, not only for his family but also for all of us."
According to Gozalov, currently 330 cars account for 1,000 people in Baku, this is close to the figures of European countries.
