The Azerbaijani Transport Ministry will start the construction of a new international trade seaport in the Alat settlement (near Baku) in early November 2010, a source close to the project said.

The work is underway on the preparation of the infrastructure necessary for the construction. The construction process will go rapidly after the launch of the work.

Construction of a new international sea port in the settlement of Alat will be implemented in three phases and completed by 2015. The first phase of the project involves the construction of two ferries, three cargo berths for receiving containers, ro-ro and conventional (universal) bulk carriers. The second phase of the project includes the construction of three additional cargo berths, the third - the construction of an additional two cargo berths. The project is estimated at more than $400 million. The port can accept up to 11.6 million tons of cargo.

The source said it is planned to transfer the existing Baku port to the Alat settlement after the completion of the first phase of the construction. The work under the first phase of the construction will be completed within two years after its launch.

"The transfer of the Baku port will start after all the necessary conditions will be prepared in the Alat," the source said.

The Alat port will be multimodal, as in addition to logistics center it is expected to create a free economic zone on its territory.
