TAP updates on hydrogen transportation studies

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept.16

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) AG consortium will announce the preliminary results of the hydrogen transportation studies by the end of 2021, Vugar Veysalov, TAP Head of External Affairs told Trend.

“We are in the process of assessing the degree to which TAP can technically accommodate transporting a blend of natural gas and hydrogen. TAP is currently in the process of assessing the requirements in the design of any new equipment. An initial desktop study is in progress and preliminary results are expected by the end of the year,” he said.

Leading European transport companies are cautious in their forecasts about the percentage of hydrogen, saying that these volumes will be around 2 percent.

As the European section of the Southern Gas Corridor, TAP has the capacity to transport approximately 10 billion cubic meters of gas per annum (bcm/a) to several markets in Europe. The pipeline is designed with the potential to expand its throughput capacity up to 20 bcm/a. A total of 5 bcm of natural gas from Azerbaijan has reached Europe via the interconnection point of Kipoi, at the Greek-Turkish border.
